JAY KAY BRINGS 914-6 PORSCHE TO RACE RETRO 2012 FOR RALLY REUNION

Jamiroquai front man and self-confessed petrolhead Jay Kay is bringing his Porsche 914-6 to this year’s Race Retro for a reunion with one of its original drivers, rally legend Bjorn Waldegard. Bjorn will be seeing if the car stands the test of time on the high octane Live Rally Stage on Saturday 25th and Sunday 25th February, before Jay Kay himself gets behind the wheel.

Bjorn drove the 914-6 in the Monte Carlo Rally, an event in which the Porsche was expected to excel. Three works-prepared cars were entered, driven by Bjorn, Ake Andersson and Gerard Larrousse, all highly skilled drivers who knew the Monte course like the backs of their hands. But the weather was to deal the Porsche team a cruel blow.

The 1971 Monte Carlo Rally was the snowiest on record. Andersson and Larrousse were forced to retire with gearbox problems, but Bjorn soldiered on to finish a worthy third overall. Sadly this marked the end of Porsche's support for the 914-6 in competition despite the fact that a 914-6 GT had won its class at Le Mans in 1970.

The 914-6 is just one of the amazing vehicles in singer Jay Kay’s collection of over 37 rare classics and luxurious supercars. Jay is a keen competitor when it comes to cars, having topped the leaderboard on Top Gear’s Star in a Reasonably Priced Car challenge so he’s bound to push the car to the limits on the specially designed course at Stoneleigh Park.

Adult tickets for Race Retro, sponsored by Peter James Insurance, start at £20 in advance with children’s tickets at £5 for Friday and Saturday and free on Sunday. MOTORISTS LOOK RETRO TO SAVE FUEL AND MONEY

Over three quarters of motorists (78 per cent)* would consider retro-fitting their car in some way to improve economy and save money.

With many motorists finding it a challenge to maintain their current car, let alone replace it with a new, more efficient model, tinkering under the hood could be one way that drivers could cut their fuel consumption. Measures such as retro-fitting a hybrid or EV system, engine chipping or a conversion to allow a vehicle to run on a different fuel type such as biofuel or LPG, are just some of the measures drivers may be considering. Of course, modifications to improve fuel economy can be much milder than this and can include things such as removing factory-fitted roof racks, adding a belly pan or covering the wheels with smooth covers.

With average petrol prices now at 133p a litre (according to PetrolPrices.com as of 19/01/2012) it is easy to see why motorists are increasingly looking for methods to conserve fuel. Of course, the old advice about eco-driving and good car maintenance still remain some of the easiest as well as the cheapest ways to improve your economy.

But if you are considering retro-fitting your car, TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk has some advice for drivers:

1. Considering converting to LPG? Make sure you use an UKLPG Approved Autogas Installer and ensure you contact your insurer as well as your vehicle manufacturer if you still have a manufacturer warranty in place. According to the UKLPG Association, you could save 40 per cent of your current fuel costs compared with petrol car and over 20 per cent compared to the equivalent diesel (see drivelpg.co.uk for more information).
2. Engine chipping or remapping as it is also known, is the process of reprogramming the car’s ECU, usually to improve performance, although it can also improve economy. Again you need to check with your insurance company and be aware that fuel chipping may affect your manufacturer warranty. It can cost a couple of hundred pounds but it can in some circumstances reduce your fuel consumption by around 20 per cent.
3. Retro-fitting a hybrid of EV system to your current vehicle may be cheaper than buying a new hybrid, but it is something should carefully consider beforehand. With ever more hybrids and electrics becoming available, it is getting more affordable all the time. For example, Toyota is planning to launch what it says will be ‘Europe’s most affordable hybrid’ in the form of a hybrid Yaris, due out before the end of the year. No exact details of price just yet but it could be a very popular model when it arrives.
4. Making your own biofuel by collecting waste oil is messy and time-consuming, although there are people out there that are willing to do it to save money. An easier way is to use a high biofuel content blend such as B30, just be careful that it’s suitable for your car. If in doubt check with your manufacturer.

Former Chairman of the Meriden Workers' Co-op John Rosamond commented today that in these times of political enthusiasm for "responsible capitalism" individuals considering participation in such ventures would gain an in depth insight from reading his book Save the Triumph Bonneville! The Inside Story of the Meriden Workers' Co-op. A detailed "warts and all" case study of the most famous of Tony Benn's worker co-operatives that, against all the odds, survived from 1975 to 1983: a period when the UK economy was similar to that of 2012 causing mass unemployment heading towards 3 million.

Based upon his Meriden experience Rosamond advises that co-ops should not been seen as a soft option to "normal" enterprise as they have to co-exist in the real world with exactly the same business disciplines, rules and regulations. However, the major advantage co-operatives do have is that employee participation in ownership guarantees total commitment and a share in the business' financial success. Perhaps if this approach is pursued more widely in the UK, the more equal and happy society politicians are looking for will result.

This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed (28 June - 1 July 2012), will mark two key anniversaries, with the peak of sports car racing 40 years ago, and the launch of the exciting Group C era 30 years back.

Forty years ago, the 1972 season was a pivotal year in sports car racing. In America, Can-Am was at its peak, with a fascinating battle for supremacy between McLaren, Porsche, Shadow and Lola, while in Europe a change in regulations prompted an intriguing fight between Ferrari, Matra and Alfa Romeo. Although ostensibly similar in appearance, these cars were very different in design philosophy, highlighting fundamental differences between European and American racing – technical sophistication versus raw power. A special class at the 2012 Festival of Speed will bring these cars together, providing a unique opportunity to witness the most exciting sports racing prototypes of all time in no-holds-barred action.

A decade later, the Group C era began in 1982, and went on to become one of the most competitive in sports car racing history, with an unprecedented number of factory teams. This summer’s Festival of Speed will celebrate 30 years since the launch of Group C, with a dedicated class including cars from Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan, Aston Martin, Lancia and Peugeot. PORSCHE ANNOUNCES A NEW GENERATION BOXSTER – THE BENCHMARK ROADSTER

The new Porsche Boxster arrives in the UK this spring offering open-top driving enthusiasts a new generation of the benchmark roadster. The Boxster has an all-new lightweight body, new flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, a completely revised chassis and evolutionary styling.

Considerably lower weight, a longer wheelbase, widened track and larger wheels significantly enhance the driving dynamics of the mid-engined sports car. These attributes, combined with many other new features including electro-mechanical power steering, result in the new Boxster not only offering superior performance but also up to 15 per cent greater fuel efficiency.

Distinctive roadster styling

The styling of the new Boxster clearly signals the unique driving experience on offer; with shorter front and rear overhangs, significantly forward-shifted windscreen, a flatter silhouette and expressive edges. Inside, the passengers are enclosed by a new fully electric hood, which now dispenses with a compartment lid for the convertible top when stowed. The interior design offers the driver and passenger more space and reflects the new Porsche outline, while the distinctive centre console – originating in the Carrera GT – further improves ergonomics.

Charismatic flat-six ‘boxer’ engines

The new generation Porsche roadster makes its debut in the classic Porsche pairing of Boxster and Boxster S. Both derivatives are powered by charismatic flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, the efficiency of which is further enhanced by electrical system recuperation, thermal management and start/stop function.

The new power unit fitted in the Boxster delivers 265 hp (195 kW) from a 2.7 litre displacement – 10 hp more than its larger capacity predecessor. Technically, it is now based on the 3.4-litre engine of the Boxster S. The 3.4-litre now delivers 315 hp (232 kW), 5 hp more than before. Both models feature a manual six-speed gearbox as standard, with the seven-speed dual-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) available as an option.

Porsche Intelligent Performance

Both models achieve their best fuel consumption and acceleration performance with the PDK.

Fuel consumption for the Porsche Boxster with PDK is 36.7mpg, and 35.3mpg for the Boxster S. With gear changes achieved without interruption to the flow of power, the Boxster sprints from

0- 62mph in 5.7 sec, the Boxster S in just 5.0 sec.

To enhance the driving dynamics further, the Sport Chrono Package option is offered on the Boxster, featuring Dynamic Transmission Mounts for the first time. Also new in the Boxster is the option of Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear limited slip differential.

The new Porsche Boxster in the UK

Built in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart, the new Porsche Boxster will go on sale in the UK from April 28. The Boxster is priced from £37,589, and from £45,384 for the Boxster S.

The Boxster features an Alcantara interior, 18” alloy wheels, Auto stop/start and Sports mode, remote control hood operation, audio CD with 7-inch colour touch-screen control, a universal audio interface offering MP3 connectivity and a three year warranty.

The Boxster S adds 19-inch alloy wheels, partial leather interior and Bi-Xenon headlights in addition to the power advantage of the larger 3.4-litre engine.

All new Boxster customers can also explore the potential of their car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF THE MGB AT THE SILVERSTONE CLASSIC 2012

This summer’s 2012 Silverstone Classic powered by the AA will be one of just three official showpiece events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the MGB, widely hailed as one of Britain’s most cherished sportscars.

The world’s biggest classic motor racing festival has teamed up with the MG Car Club and the MGB50 committee to establish a special trilogy of birthday parties to mark what’s a very special golden anniversary for the enduring and endearing MGB.

The celebrations for the world famous ‘B’ open with MGLive! in June and conclude with a static showcase gathering at Blenheim Palace in September. In between comes this year’s all-action, three-day Silverstone Classic, staged at the home of the British Formula 1 Grand Prix from 20-22 July. All MGB owners attending these three special trilogy events will be presented with a unique commemorative rally plaque exclusive to the individual festivity.

As well as featuring the very best of historic racing plus live music from classic rock bands, the Silverstone Classic is renowned for its huge car club displays often highlighting significant milestones in the history of iconic marques. Last year’s Classic marked the 50th anniversary of another truly great British sportscar when more than 1000 E-type Jaguars helped to establish a new Guinness World Record. Now the focus will switch to the much-loved MGB, first launched to the public at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1962.

“We are very proud to welcome the MGB50 celebration to the Silverstone Classic,” said event director Nick Wigley. “The ‘B’ is at the heart of the classic car movement in the UK and, as part of this trilogy of special events, we look forward to giving owners a great rocking and racing experience. This is a fantastic era for celebrating golden milestones in the British sportscar industry – last year the Silverstone Classic honoured the 50th birthday of the E-type with a Guinness World Record; this year we will be paying homage to 50 years of the remarkable MGB.”

In total more than half a million MGBs were built between 1962 and 1980 in Abingdon – home of the illustrious MG factory situated just down the road from Silverstone to the south of Oxford. From the original Mark I roadster, through to the elegant MGB GT and the fearsome GT V8, the evergreen MGB has endeared itself as one of the most affordable and adored models whether as a first sportscar, desirable convertible, potent coupé or restoration project. The ‘B’ also enjoyed some notable racing and rallying successes during the Sixties with victories, either outright or in class, in a number of major endurance sportscar events (Brands Hatch, Nurburgring, Sebring, Targa Florio, Spa-Francorchamps) as well as the Monte Carlo Rally.

With its rich mix of on-track competition and off-track entertainment, the Silverstone Classic will provide the perfect backdrop for the MGB50 with more than 800 historic race cars in race action and 7,000 classic cars on display across the weekend. Adding to the non-stop party atmosphere there will be flat out family fun for everyone with live music from Mike & The Mechanics and Adam Ant in the evenings plus a free fun fair, retail village, air displays, demos and the new AA World feature with its own wealth of attractions. So, whether coming for the day or taking advantage of the many camping options to enjoy the full three-day festival, MGB owners will have a truly memorable 50th birthday celebration.

“It’s shaping up to be a tremendous year for the B,” confirmed MG Car Club General Manager Julian White. “Each of the three events offers MGB owners something different and I know many enthusiasts will be keen to attend all three celebrations. The MG Car Club is based in Abingdon, the spiritual home of the marque, so we know first-hand how much the MGB means to people. So it’s only natural we have big plans for the MGB50 anniversary.”

DRIVE A RALLY CAR AT RACE RETRO 2012!

Visitors to Race Retro are to be given the chance to drive a rally car, thanks to HERO, The Historic Endurance Rallying organisation. For just £20, visitors to the event, which takes place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th February, will be given the chance ‘arrive and drive’ one of HERO’s rally prepared cars, put it through its paces and get a feel for rally driving on a purpose built course adjacent to the Live Rally Stage.

Hero’s ‘arrive and drive’ fleet consists of classic vehicles that have undergone extensive restoration and are maintained daily by a team of in house mechanics. Each car is prepared to meet the requirements of endurance rallying as they can be hired for use at events all over the world. Visitors can either book on the day or contact enquiries@heroevents.eu to reserve a time slot that fits in with the rest of their time at the show.

LOTUS TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE AS THE CHOSEN MARQUE AT THE 2012 GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

A full six months ahead of next summer’s Festival of Speed (28 June - 1 July 2012), Goodwood is excited to reveal that it will be honouring the pioneering Lotus marque with the main ‘Central Feature’ installation, displayed prominently outside Goodwood House.

Goodwood will celebrate this much-loved British brand at an exciting time in the marque’s history, as Lotus is currently two years into a dynamic five year brand reinvigoration plan with the goal of returning the marque to its original status alongside other prestigious sports car manufacturers. The plan includes an entire new range, the first of which will be the return of the iconic Esprit in 2013.

It’s not all about looking to the future for Lotus though, a big part of the brand is its heritage and Lotus will enjoy a vast array of significant anniversaries in 2012, including 60 years since the first Lotus company was founded by Colin Chapman in 1952, four years after the incomparable engineer had built his first vehicle – the Mark 1 trials car – in an old stable behind his parent’s Railway Hotel in Hornsey, North London.

Next year also sees the 50th anniversary of the ground-breaking Lotus Elan sportscar, 40 years since the iconic Esprit supercar concept was first revealed by Giugiaro, 35 years since the innovative Lotus 78 ground effect Formula 1 car competed, and 20 years since cyclist Chris Boardman won a gold medal for Britain in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, riding the revolutionary Type 108 bicycle developed by Lotus.

The enviable global reputation that Lotus enjoys today grew out of Chapman’s unparalleled technical ingenuity to dominate all levels of motor sport, from club racing to Formula 1, to create a glorious and enduring legacy. To date Lotus has gone on to win 13 Formula 1 World Championships (six drivers, and seven constructers titles), and a spectacular collection of these victorious F1 cars will be at Goodwood in the summer, along with an impressive selection of Lotus Indycars, saloons, sports and road cars, all forming a key attraction at the 2012 Festival of Speed. A wealth of current and ex-works Lotus drivers are also expected to appear at Goodwood.

Full details of the Lotus vehicle and driver line-up, along with further news about the main Lotus Central Feature installation, will be revealed over the coming months.

THE 2012 GOODWOOD REVIVAL TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AC COBRA WITH A UNIQUE ONE-MODEL RACE

The finest collection of significant and authentic racing AC Cobras ever assembled in the UK will gather at next year’s Goodwood Revival (14-16 September 2012) for an exceptional one-model race.

BLUEBIRD CN7 AT BEAULIEU DECEMBER 2011

On Saturday 3rd December, Donald Stevens, Design Team Member and Project Co-Ordinator for the land speed record breaker, Bluebird CN7, will be the guest speaker at an evening hosted by the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.

Donald Stevens was the first employee of Norris Brothers Ltd. and worked on many of their innovative engineering solutions. After National Service in the RAF as a trainee pilot, he rejoined the company to work with the two chief designers on the concept of the Campbell-Norris 7 (Bluebird CN7), eventually becoming project co-ordinator for the construction.

He has given lectures on the design of Bluebird CN7 to engineering institutions countrywide. His talk at the National Motor Museum will include how the basic design was developed, the wind tunnel testing, method of construction, the runs and crash at Bonneville, and the real potential of CN7.

The evening, starting at 8.00pm, will be held in the Lecture Theatre of the National Motor Museum Collections Centre. A pay bar is available for the purchase of beers, wines, soft drinks, tea and coffee. Before, the Museum will open from 6.30pm for a private view.

Tickets are £10 (with all profits going to the National Motor Museum Trust)

The ‘Do You Want To Be A Motoring Writer’ conference being held at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu on Saturday 19th November 2011 has attracted some very knowledgeable speakers. Recently that great raconteur, Stuart Turner (left), has been added to the list.

The conference is aimed at the enthusiastic motor club member interested in particular in veteran, vintage or classic cars and wants to get something more out of their hobby. The morning session will be about writing for magazines and the electronic media, whilst the afternoon will concentrate more on book writing and publishing.

Other speakers include; Steve Cropley, Editor in Chief of Haymarket Motoring magazines, Mark Hughes, Editorial Director, Haynes Book Publishing, Steve Redway, Editor of the TR Register club magazine TRaction, Mark Robinson, editor of Mini Magazine, Graham Robson (below), author of over 150 motoring books and Jon Pressnell, freelance classic car journalist and historian. There will be question sessions at intervals so that the audience can join in, ask questions or express opinions.

REMINISCENCES OF TRIUMPH & THE MERIDEN WORKERS' CO-OP WIRRAL BRANCH TALK

John Rosamond's talk to the 40 members and celebrity guests of the Wirral branch of the Triumph Owners Motor Cycle Club (TOMCC) took place at 8.00pm on 24th October 2011.

John Rosamond, John Powell and Bill Smith; both special guests made a welcome contribution to discussions.

The "cowshed" restaurant at The Wheatsheaf pub Raby, was the excellent venue.
Many of the issues raised by Save the Triumph Bonneville! The Inside Story of the Meriden Workers' Co-op were revisited freshening the book's appeal and allowing further detailed explanation plus an opportunity for a lively question and answer debate.

The warmth of response John's talk received suggests that in future there maybe further opportunities to repeat it at other TOMCC branches, stimulating book sales further.

To mark the launch of the all new event at London ExCeL Top Gear Live is celebrating 40 years of the legendary racing film Le Mans at the exclusive Top Gear Live London Gala on 24 November 2011.

In celebration of the film’s 40th anniversary, which starred Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, guests will gain an unforgettable insight into Le Mans as they watch original clips, view stills and marvel at behind-the-scenes footage while sharing the memories of those who were there.

VIP guests will also be joined by Chad McQueen, son of the late Steve Mc Queen, and racing legends Derek Bell and David Piper, as they reminisce on the making of the film – where both risked their lives as they brought to life McQueen’s dream: to create the best, most realistic film about motorsport ever.

Le Mans, which used cutting-edge techniques and filmed largely live, featured the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512 and is remembered for its breathtaking footage from the actual 1970 race.

This iconic piece of cinematography, which featured 26 high performance cars, 41 stunt drivers and some 350,000 French speaking extras, uniquely captures the exhilarating atmosphere of arguably the greatest race on earth.

Guests will also have an exclusive opportunity to get up close to David Piper’s original 1969 Porsche 917 which will be on display at the gala event.

Dan's tragic death over the weekend during an Indy series race in Las Vegas has sparked controversy over the safety of the series and particularly grid sizes in this 230mph sport. Whatever the outcome of last weekend's terrible events, Dan's career in this gladiatorial contest is fully documented in Veloce's book The British at Indianapolis including his Indy 500 win in 2005 and second places in 2009 and 2010 - a fitting tribute to a great racer.

The British at Indianapolis by Ian Wagstaff, follows the format of the author’s award winning The British at Le Mans. It recounts the history of the Indianapolis 500 race through the eyes and actions of those British born or British citizens who have driven in it, or been involved in any other way – be it as a designer, mechanic, or official. It also examines the British built cars that have won the Indy 500 and the significance of the rear-engined revolution brought to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by Cooper in 1961, and elevated to success by Lotus and Lola. It includes such names as Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Nigel Mansell, Dan Wheldon and Dario Franchitti. In addition to the 500 it includes other races at the IMS, notably Lewis Hamilton’s victory in the Formula One Grand Prix there. It is a story that goes back to the first 500 in 1911, when London-born Hughie Hughes became the first British-born driver to race in the 500, to the present day, with more British than ever competing in the race and British drivers winning twice in the last four years. PORSCHE AND HONDA TO BE CELEBRATED AT RACE RETRO 2012

Race Retro, Europe’s premier International Historic Motorsport Show, will be celebrating the Porsche marque, thirty years of the Group C Porsche 956 and thirty years of the Honda Racing Corporation, when it returns to Stoneleigh Park, Coventry, from 24-26 February 2012,

Porsche is Race Retro’s chosen car marque for 2012. From the 1948 birth of the iconic 356, the first sports car to bear the Porsche name, to the current-model 911 GT2 RS, an astonishing and pulse-quickening creation, Porsche has relentlessly pushed the performance envelope. Committed to technical excellence and continual improvement, Porsche has immersed itself in motor sport, and the lessons learnt and advantages gained are passed directly to its road cars. This high-octane philosophy permeates the marque and always has done.

Porsche’s motor sports heritage across the decades will be well represented at Race Retro, with a number of static race and rally displays in Hall 1. Plus, there’ll be guest appearances by Porsche race and rally stars, including a number of legendary Porsche works drivers. There’ll be plenty of sideways action too, on the live action rally stage, on both Saturday and Sunday, where a jaw-dropping selection of rallying icons, including a Porsche 911 RSR, will be showing their mettle.

Hall 2 will be home to Race Retro’s ‘The Porsche 956 at Thirty’ celebrations. It’s hard to appreciate that this astonishing Group C car first competed back in 1982. A wonderfully-timeless and evocative design, it so purposefully and powerfully symbolises Porsche’s involvement with motor sport and its triumphs. The 956, and its successor the 962, secured numerous team, manufacturers’, drivers’, race, and championship successes throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Few manufacturers have been such an integral part of bike racing as Honda hence the celebration of its glorious thirty years. Ever since the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) was founded in 1982, this hugely-successful organisation has been at the forefront of GP racing, road racing, endurance racing, trials riding and motorcross. And, uniquely, as well as covering all disciplines, since its inception, HRC has actively supported privateer teams and individual riders who have always been able to avail themselves of technical support, set-up advice, research and development, and specialist parts. Visitors to Hall 3 will delight in the variety of Honda displays and delight in the fact that they can rub shoulders with Honda team riders, team managers, and mechanics.

Of course, Classic bikes should be heard as well as seen! The good news is that the race bike ‘Fire-up Paddock’ is returning for 2012. Each day, this aural arena will resonate with the sounds of bike racing’s glorious past, including the marvellous multi-cylinder Hondas.

Adult ticket prices are £20 when booking in advance, £25 on the gate. Children’s tickets are £5 on Friday or Saturday and free on Sunday. Parking is also free throughout. As the 50th anniversary of the incomparable Jaguar E-Type draws to a close, British Motor Heritage (BMH) has been celebrating an E-Type milestone of its own – the production of its 100th replacement bonnet.

Best known for the manufacture of replacement bodyshells and individual panels for the MGB, MGR V8, MG Midget, Austin Healey Sprite, Triumph TR6 and original Minis etc, BMH these days also produces bonnets for the Series 1, 2 and 3 Jaguar E-Types.

Supplied exclusively to Unipart Jaguar Classic and distributed by Jaguar Classic Parts, the bonnets are manufactured using the original Jaguar tooling and the 100th one (that for a Series 1 model) was completed on September 11 by Stephen Fry, Martin Pollard, Alan Stacey and Dave Jeffs, who between can boast over 40 years’ service to BMH. The E-Type bonnet is just one of a range of body panels now made by BMH for Unipart Jaguar Classic.

CASH-STRAPPED COMMUTERS SWITCH TO SCOOTERS

The recent announcement of record increases in the prices of rail season tickets could explain the current boom in scooter sales. During August registrations of new scooters jumped by 29.8%, as half a million rail passengers faced the prospect of the biggest leap in ticket costs since privatisation in 1995.

Sales of scooters were already running at 20% above the previous year, but the spike in August would appear to underline concerns that cash-strapped commuters could no longer afford the "eye-wateringly expensive" rail fares, as described by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond, and were seeking alternative ways to get to work.
Richard Davies of Peugeot Scooters reports that sales in Greater London have trebled so far this year; "Over the past couple of years Peugeot have introduced several new 50cc and 125cc scooters aimed specifically at customers looking for affordable everyday transport and as a direct result our sales in general are up 75% and in the London area we're looking at a 211% increase."

Peugeot's 125cc Vivacity scooter sells for £2099, costs just £16 per year to tax and can get a commuter to work and back for a week on just one gallon of fuel (based on an average UK commuting distance of 8.5 miles).

Richard Davies adds; "It's not only the cost of public transport that's driving customers into Peugeot Scooters' showrooms, it's also the attraction of being able to ride from door-to-door without the hassle of queues, cramped conditions or cancellations."

Following a successful inaugural Custom Motorcycle Show, held in Bournemouth earlier this year, Ocean Events is delighted to announce that from 2012, the show will be held annually at Beaulieu, home of the world famous National Motor Museum, in the heart of the New Forest.

The 2012 show will be held in the Beaulieu parkland on the 16th and 17th June, when visitors will not only be able to enjoy The Custom Motorcycle Show, but also the established annual Hot Rod & Custom Car Festival plus all the other attractions that Beaulieu has to offer.

Hundreds of world class custom motorcycles will also be on show, with over 70 bikes entering the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building (as part of the UK Affiliate rounds). There will be several categories for the bike builders including Freestyle, Modified Harley, Period Chopper, Daily Rider and Streetfighter/Performance Custom.

There will be hundreds of exhibitors including custom bike dealers, custom accessories and hard parts, plus the Vendors and Merchandise Village.

From 9.30am on both days of the show, there will be a Ride-In, with all riders of custom motorcycles invited into the event to show off their bikes.

GOODWOOD PAYS TRIBUTE TO JUAN MANUEL FANGIO AT THE 2011 REVIVAL

Goodwood’s annual driver tribute feature at next week’s Revival (16-18 September) will honour one of the greatest drivers that ever raced. On the centenary of his birth, and 60th anniversary of him winning the first of his five World Championships, Goodwood will pay tribute to Juan Manuel Fangio.

Fangio raced twice at Goodwood, with his best result at the West Sussex circuit being second in the challenging BRM V16 P15 on 26 September 1953.

This legendary BRM will be just one of over 25 of the most famous cars that Fangio drove, as Goodwood honours the life and achievements of this incredible man with a daily track parade.

Other significant cars forming part of the tribute will include three important Mercedes-Benz racers being sent over especially from the marque’s Stuttgart-based Museum – Fangio’s ex-300 SLR, W196 and W196 Streamliner. His Alfa Romeo Tipo 158/9 ‘Alfetta’, Ferrari 290 MM and 860 Monzas, Gordini Type 15s and 16, Maserati 250F, 300S and 450S, Jaguar C-type, Talbot-Lago Type 26S and Kurtis Kraft-Offenhauser ‘Dayton Steel Foundry Special’ Indy car will also form part of the daily parade.

Two of his earliest racing cars are also being shipped over specifically for the Revival from the Fundación Fangio in Argentina – his famous 1939 Chevrolet Coupe TC and the 1947 Volpi Chevrolet ‘La Petisa’ – the first time these cars have come to the UK.

In addition to Fangio’s famous race cars, several former teammates that competed with the great man will be on hand, including Sir Stirling Moss and Hans Herrman, as well as Tony Brooks.and Maria Teresa de Filippis.

World premiere of new 911 at 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, Sept 13-25

True to the 911 tradition, the distinctive Porsche design language exudes power and elegance. The unmistakable silhouette still catches the eye while incorporating new, exciting contours and precisely designed details; a 100mm longer wheelbase for improved stability and greater interior space; front and rear overhangs are shorter, maintaining the compact footprint that has been a longstanding 911 attribute; the sporting stance is emphasised by the lower roof line and a wider front track increases on-road presence further still while raising the renowned chassis dynamics.

The rear-mounted, flat six cylinder engine is an equally symbolic component of the 911 identity; and behind the rear axle of the new car lies an uprated range of powerful, efficient and evocative ‘boxer’ engines. The 911 Carrera is powered by a new 3.4-litre engine developing 350 hp, and the Carrera S features a 400 hp version of the familiar 3.8-litre. These new engines offer performance improvements for both models. The 3.4-litre Carrera with PDK accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.6 sec, 0.1 sec quicker than the prior model. Pressing the Sport Plus button on the optional Sport Chrono Pack cuts that to 4.4 sec. The 3.8-litre Carrera S with PDK can accelerate from 0- 62 mph in 4.3 sec (Sport Plus 4.1 sec), 0.2sec quicker than its predecessor.

The Jaguar C-X16 production concept will make its global debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 13.

Designed by the same team that produced the Jaguar XJ, XF and XK – headed by Jaguar Director of Design Ian Callum – the C-X16 concept is a precursor to future Jaguar sports cars that will aim to set new class benchmarks in design, vehicle dynamics and technology.

STIRLING MOSS MAKES TRACKS FOR CHELSEA

He might have retired (at the age of 81, no less!) from competitive motor racing, but Sir Stirling Moss OBE is still living life in the fast lane.

And one of the motor racing legend’s first public appearances since hanging up his famous ‘Herbert Johnson’ – his white, open-faced crash helmet from the 1960s – will be as Patron of Chelsea AutoLegends.

It’s a fitting link. Moss has lived in London all his working life while Chelsea AutoLegends has been described as London’s greatest show on wheels. It will be held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on Sunday 4 September.

“London is the centre of the world, a place with a real pulse. It is entirely fitting that somewhere as great as our capital has a show as dynamic as Chelsea AutoLegends,” said the 16-time Grand Prix winner.

Sir Stirling’s top flight motor racing career ended in a high speed accident at the Goodwood circuit in 1962, but a more recent career in historic motor sport ended in less dramatic circumstances, this June.

Halfway through qualifying his Porsche RS61 for the Le Mans Legends event, he suddenly realised it was time to call it quits. He drove back to the pits, got out of the car and announced his retirement. “I scared myself and I always said that, if I felt I was not up to it or that I was getting in the way of fellow competitors, then I would retire,” he said.

While he might no longer be driving in anger, Moss still plans to be involved in historic motorsport events, giving demonstrations runs or, as at Chelsea AutoLegends, being involved as a figurehead.

Special themes at the show will include displays of Le Mans cars over the years, Group B rally cars and classic bikes. There will be cavalcades of supercars and motorcycles arriving at the show during the day, plus special tributes to the Jaguar E-type and Mini Cooper – both 50-years-old this year.

The ten most significant road cars of all times, as voted by Autocar magazine, will be on official display with countless other classics in the car parks. It’s not just cars but people, too. As well as Sir Stirling, multiple two-wheel World Champion Phil Read and rally hero Russell Brookes will also visit.

And in keeping with the venue which is just a stone’s throw from the Kings Road, and the many displays from the Swinging Sixties, it is hoped that visitors will get into the spirit of the day by wearing mini skirts, kaftans and bell-bottoms and put flowers in their hair.

THE GOODWOOD REVIVAL HONOURS THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JAGUAR E-TYPE

In just six weeks time, the finest collection of significant and authentic racing Jaguar E-types ever assembled will gather at the 2011 Goodwood Revival (16-18 September) for an exceptionalFordwater Trophy race.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the most iconic of British sport cars, as an exclusive race for 2011, Goodwood’s Fordwater Trophy will feature a grid exclusively made up of Jaguar E-types of a type that raced up to 1966. The race will be a 45-minute two-driver race, with driver changes in the pits between 15 and 30 minutes.

The Fordwater Trophy will feature an extraordinary mix of historically-significant competition E-types, including six of the 12 lightweights still in existence racing, plus three more of the surviving cars present on static display.

With significant racing E-type low drag coupés, roadsters and fixed head coupés also competing, the race promises to make for an intriguing spectacle and a fitting tribute to Britain’s most popular sports car and its special relationship with Goodwood.

An exceptional line-up of top drivers will campaign the Jaguars, including ex-F1 stars Gerhard Berger, Jackie Oliver, Jochen Mass, Adrian Newey, Desiré Wilson and Tiff Needell, touring car legends Andy Priaulx, John Cleland and Anthony Reid, ex-Jaguar Le Mans winner Andy Wallace and actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson.

NISSAN TO GIVE LINCOLN A PUBLIC PLUG

Nissan is to fund the installation of Lincoln’s first public electric vehicle charging point, following the recent Top Gear feature which highlighted the lack of charging infrastructure in the East Midlands city.

In the television programme, presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May drove a pair of electric vehicles, including the Nissan LEAF, into the centre of Lincoln in an attempt to find somewhere to charge their cars.

Having failed to find any public infrastructure the pair were forced to charge at the University in the centre of the city, dangling cables through an open window.

Should the presenters choose to attempt the journey again in future, they will discover a newly-installed PodPoint charging unit dedicated to them. With two sockets, it would allow both Jeremy and James to recharge their batteries at the same time.

Charging will be free of charge to electric vehicle owners.

Councillor Fay Smith, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services and Public Protection at the City of Lincoln Council, said: "The Top Gear programme highlighted the fact that Lincoln does not currently provide for electric cars and we're really pleased that Nissan is now funding a charging point. We're committed to reducing the city's carbon footprint, but know that we can't do it alone, so it's great that private businesses like Nissan are getting behind this and putting in the infrastructure."

The PodPoint charging unit is due to be installed before the end of the month and the presenters will be invited to return to Lincoln and be the first to plug in to the new charger.

Top Gear Executive Producer Andy Wilman said: "This is excellent news for the electric car community of Lincoln. If the charging point had existed when Top Gear were there, James wouldn't now be walking around with Jeremy's name tattooed on his bottom. Still, better late than never."

Nissan’s Executive Vice President Andy Palmer said: “Research tells us that most LEAF owners will charge their car at home or at their place of work, but drivers like having the ability to ‘top up’ their charge when they are out and about, especially if they are making longer journeys. With its new charging points and the fame generated by Top Gear, Lincoln could find itself becoming a tourist destination for Nissan LEAF owners.”

An exclusive work of art commissioned by Alfa Romeo has been unveiled to celebrate the launch of the new eco-friendly Alfa MiTo 1.3 JTDM-2 85 bhp Sprint in a partnership between the Italian marque and Castle Galleries.

Renowned artist Louise Dear was approached for the bespoke piece due to her typically young and exciting style, which combine classic beauty with unique design; characteristics shared with Alfa Romeo’s sporty compact MiTo model.

Using a complex method of layered paint onto aluminium, Louise modelled the flamboyant art, entitled ‘Because I Can’, on her 17 year old daughter and introduced unmistakable influences from the Alfa MiTo into the work.

The inspiration behind the art derives from Alfa Romeo’s new congestion charge free Alfa MiTo, which has only 95g/km of CO2 emissions, and is interpreted in the subject through a vibrant floral backdrop and mix of bold colours. The painting also incorporates elements of the iconic Alfa Romeo logo, and legendary Cloverleaf symbol which is synonymous with the brand.

Louise said: “I really wanted to capture Alfa Romeo's heritage and elegance within my creation, while bringing out the stylish and fashionable aspects of the Alfa MiTo.

“The Alfa MiTo is targeted at a young, stylish audience who have a positive attitude to life, and are focussed on being successful, and within my painting I have tried to bring this across using a combination of designs that convey powerful imagery mixed with elegance and beauty.”

The artwork was revealed in an exclusive evening at Artica Galleries, Covent Garden (part of the Castle Galleries group) on July 14, attended by a host of VIPs and will now tour galleries across the UK.

An Alfa MiTo 1.3 JTDM-2 85 bhp Sprint wrapped in Louise’s design, along with the original artwork will now head to Castle Galleries locations - Birmingham’s Mailbox on July 28, Norwich Chapelfield on August 4, and Cardiff Bay on the 11 August.

ADRIAN NEWEY WINS MOTORSPORT AWARD

Adrian Newey was presented with the MIA's most prestigious personal Award by Damon Hill during their annual Summer Reception at the House of Lords hosted by Lord Drayson. Newey took the MIA Award for the Most Outstanding Personal Contribution to the Motorsport Industry, following his exceptional success over the past 30 years.

Newey joins a highly-impressive list of previous MIA Award winners, including Harvey Postlethwaite, Ross Brawn OBE, Sir Frank Williams CBE, Sir Stirling Moss OBE, Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, Tom Wheatcroft and Bernie Ecclestone, among others.

Newey is widely regarded as one of the greatest engineers in motorsport history, being the only designer to win the Formula One Constructors Championship with three different F1 teams. As Technical Director of Red Bull Racing, he designed their 2010 championship-winning car, the RB6, and is enjoying his 2011 RB7 design dominating the field once again.

In 1980 - straight from Southampton University - he joined Fittipaldi under Harvey Postlethwaite, then March, where he had his first taste of success in the USA, designing IMSA GTP winners and Indy cars. His 85C chassis won the Indy 500 and took the CART title.

In 1990, he joined Williams F1, and - with Patrick Head - was instrumental in making F1 champions of Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Alain Prost. He moved to McLaren F1 to do the same for Mika Hakkinen.

Since 2006, Adrian has brought success to Red Bull Racing, with last year's fabulous double world championship win.

He races for enjoyment in his GT40, Jaguar E-Type and Ginetta G50, and more seriously in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He was presented with his own Red Bull RB5 as a reward for his achievements with the team.

GOODWOOD GETS READY FOR 2011 REVIVAL

With this year’s Festival of Speed now a fond but distant memory for the 181,000 enthusiastic spectators that attended the event, the excitement for motor racing at Goodwood is growing again with just over nine weeks to go until the 2011 Goodwood Revival (16-18 September) gets underway with its mouth-watering grids, scintillating on-track action, and a number of significant anniversaries to celebrate.

The 2011 Revival is set to build on the success of last year’s event, when a record-breaking 134,000 people attended over the weekend. As ever, the Revival offers visitors of all ages a chance to revel in the romance and glamour of motor racing as it used to be. It is the only sporting event in the world set entirely to a period theme and, every year, spectators and competitors take a magical step back in time by getting into the effervescent Goodwood spirit. The majority of visitors enter into the spirit of the event, dressing in appropriate clothing from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s.

This September’s event will offer an action-packed weekend of historic motor racing and period theatre for all the family, as always – with much more besides. The following is a summary of all the on-track activity:

Desiré Wilson was in action at Brand Hatch at the weekend, driving a 1952 Jaguar E-type in a 42-car field as part of the E-type challenge, celebrating 50 years of E-type. Also promoting her forthcoming biography ahead of its official launch at Goodwood Revival in September, Desiré was signing autographs in the Brands Hatch megastore.

Desiré commented: "The autograph session went really well. 30 minutes of continual signing - lot's of people from my era of racing and a lot that saw me race at Brands and win races. So lot's of fun."

Desiré's next event is the Silverstone Classic (22-24 July), where she will also be racing and signing autographs.

Thanks to Lord March once again for allowing automotive enthusiasts to descend upon the Goodwood estate for a weekend of petrolhead heaven at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Highlights this year included a central theme which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar E-type. We recorded an interview with E-type authority, Peter Crespin to mark the event. We were also very fortunate to grab a short interview with F1 legend Adrian Newey. Adrian recently provided the foreword for forthcoming Veloce book Race & Trackday Driving Techniques. The author, David Hornsey actually taught Adrian some basic principles of developing skills as a trackday driver. Adrian, more renowned for his development of F1 cars than driving, was happy to give the short interview in the Red Bull garage just after he completed his run up the famous hillclimb.

JAGUAR E-TYPE SCULPTURE AT GOODWOOD

A striking iteration of the Jaguar E-type, which celebrates its 50th birthday this year, will be the centrepiece at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The Jaguar E-type sculpture soars 28 metres into the air in front of the backdrop of Goodwood House. At 150 tonnes, the installation weighs the same as 122 Series 1 E-types and took 10 days to install by a firm specialising in bridge building.

This work of art was created using half a kilometer of painted steel tubes 1,200mm in diameter. Originally intended for use in gas pipelines, these are constructed from 12mm thick steel and machined to very high tolerances, as Jaguar claims.

The shape of the sculpture is the work of sculptor Gerry Judah. The design process began in January and was followed by detailed engineering calculations and planning stages that lasted four months.

“The E-type is famous for its shape but too small and delicate to hoist into the air. I thought I would like to express the form of the car itself without any embellishments. Everyone recognises the E-type, the shape speaks for itself. You can’t compete with it, you can’t digress from it,” Judah explains.

“Jaguar has always been proud of its heritage and we feel particularly honoured to have been asked to provide the Goodwood sculpture for a second time. The E-type captures the essential beauty, drama and passion of every Jaguar – engineering and design DNA that is equally apparent in the current range,” added Geoff Cousins, Managing Director, Jaguar UK.

A first for Veloce: simultaneous publication of a book and an app!
The Peugeot 205GTI book is the 53rd in Veloce's popular Essential Buyer's Guide series covering classic and sports cars and motorbikes. However, we are particularly proud of this new app - our 6th - as it features video footage of the author taking us around a typical Peugeot 205GTI and telling us exactly where to look for problems. GOODWOOD CONFIRMS INDY 500 CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS AT 2011 FESTIVAL OF SPEED

Authentic Indy 500 bricks at Goodwood to become a permanent feature.

In little more than a week, over 40 significant and rarely-seen Indy 500 race cars will assemble at the annual Festival of Speed (30 June – 3 July), as Goodwood stages the largest centenary celebration of this great American race outside of the USA.

In anticipation of the arrival of the first shipment of Indy cars from the USA, Festival of Speed founder Lord March has laid the first of a number of genuine 1911 Indy bricks - sent over especially from Indianapolis for the Goodwood celebrations – at the iconic Festival hillclimb start line.

The famous Indianapolis bricks are significant as the Indiana track’s surface was made up of 3.2million of these bricks, ultimately leading to its nickname of ‘The Brick Yard.’ The authentic Indy 500 bricks at Goodwood will now become a permanent feature of the 1.16-mile West Sussex hillclimb.

As with the Indy 500 grid, 33 Indy cars will be lined-up on the Goodwood hillclimb to reflect the number that traditionally start the 500-mile race. A total of over 40 Indy cars will be displayed together in the Festival’s Formula One Paddock to create Goodwood’s very own ‘Gasoline Alley’.

Most of the cars will be appearing in the UK for the very first time, as will many of the famous Indianapolis drivers, all accompanied by the fanfare and pageantry that is synonymous with the world’s biggest single-day sporting event, so Festival goers can expect real razzamatazz, with music, colour and wild flag waving.

Indy 500 drivers in attendance at Goodwood will include the winners of the last five Indianapolis, plus 14 winners, victorious in 25 races, including the 2011 Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon. He will be joined by three-time champion Helio Castroneves, Indy legends Bobby Unser and Al Unser Junior, Bobby Rahal, driving his 1986 Indy 500-winning March 86C, plus Gil de Ferran in his 2003 Indy-winning Penske and Dario Franchitti, driving the Lotus 38 that Jim Clark drove to second place in the 1966 race.

Indy car highlights include the 1911 Marmon ‘Wasp’, 1928 Miller Special, 1947 Deidt-Offenhauser ‘Blue Crown Special’, 1968 Lotus-Pratt & Whitney 56 ‘STP Special’, 1970 PJ-Ford ‘Johnny Lightening Special’, 1980 Chaparral-Cosworth 2K and 1994 Penske-Mercedes PC23. An example of the 2011 Indy 500 Pace Car – a Chevrolet Camaro convertible – will lead the pack.

Commenting on Goodwood’s Indianapolis centenary celebrations, Lord March says: “I am delighted that we are able to honour this momentous anniversary. American motor sport has always been an important element of the Festival of Speed, and there is no bigger event in the American sporting calendar than the Indianapolis 500. To be able to honour the centenary in such a major way, and now have a bit of Indianapolis permanently at Goodwood with the start line bricks is a real honour.”

With the aim of reaching the Great Pyramid of Giza, the couple's epic journey started at Hatfield House, Herts, on May 22nd and will end at the same venue in just 3 days time on June 26th.

Nicky and Rob are making the run to support the Willow Foundation charity which helps young people afflicted with terrible illnesses to live their dreams or to take a break from treatment to be with their loved ones. Nicky and Rob hope that their arduous journey, without a support crew, will raise £11,000 for the Willow foundation.

IAN WAGSTAFF RECEIVES AWARD

Ian Wagstaff receives the American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association’s Book of the Year Award from president ‘Dusty’ Brandel. The presentation took place at AARWBA’s annual breakfast the morning before the Indianapolis 500, Ian having won the award for his work, ‘The British at Indianapolis’, which is published by Veloce.

A history of the British influence on the Indianapolis 500, including not only the drivers and cars, but the many others – mechanics, designers, and officials – who have been involved. The story is set out in a series of stand-alone chapters, with a wide variety of informative sidebars, and goes back 100 years to the early days of the race, through the British-led, rear-engined revolution of the 1960s to the present day.

In just ten days time the annual UK National Motorsport Week (25 June-3 July) gets underway, celebrating Britain’s dominant role in global motor racing with a week of activities culminating at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed (30 June-3 July) - the world’s greatest celebration of motor sport and car culture, where almost every motor sport discipline is honoured and can be seen in action.

The 2011 National Motorsport Week is an exciting partnership between the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), the Motor Sports Association (MSA) and Goodwood, with this annual event being switched to an earlier date in high summer to incorporate the Festival of Speed.

A SLEEPING BEAUTY IS FULLY RESTORED!

In February 2010 we featured this picture on our Sleeping Beauties blog.

We've just been informed by Philip Leemans at Strada e Corsa that this car (SIATA CS208 Balbo) is now completely restored, and just won the famous Concorso D’Eleganza Villa D’Este in Como, Italy!

Philip tells us: "After seeing the ‘before’ picture, it was quite a challenge! We rebuilt the mechanical components (engine, transmission, suspension/brakes) while Carrozzeria Quality Cars in Italy did the body and interior. The restoration took about 4 years, so winning this prestigious prize was a great honor for us and the owner."

BLUEBIRD LAND SPEED TEAM NEED YOU

History will repeat itself on Saturday 2 July and Sunday 3 July at Pendine Sands, Carmarthenshire, when Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell MBE, will attempt to set speed records in his car Bluebird.

In 1924, Malcolm Campbell achieved his first World Land Speed Record of 146.16mph at Pendine Sands. This begun a long history of record breaking by the Campbell family.

Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell MBE and nephew of Donald Campbell CBE, started his record-breaking career in 1998 when he broke the UK Land Speed Record for an electric car.

Wales subsequently raised the electric record to 137mph at Pendine Sands in 2000 and in 2009 he broke the world speed record for a steam car at 148mph.

He now plans a world land speed record attempt for an electric car in 2013, aiming for more than 500mph. As preparation for this, Wales and his team will conduct speed trials at Pendine Sands on the weekend of 2/3 July 2011 – with the additional aim of establishing new UK electric car records. In recognition of his family heritage, Wales' speed record cars are all named Bluebird.

When Malcolm Campbell broke records at Pendine Sands, he was helped considerably by local volunteers – including with accommodation and marshalling. Indeed, the record attempts would not have been possible without such generous help and support of the local community.

Don Wales is now appealing for similar support during the weekend of 2/3 July 2011. He says: "I have a team of up to 30 people requiring accommodation and feeding and volunteers are needed to help as course marshals and fodders (people who remove debris from the sands).

Without a principal sponsor as yet, the development of the car is taking all of what limited budget we have. I hope people will revive the spirit of the 1920s and volunteer to help."

CONVOY OF 50 E-TYPES CROSSES LONDON TO MARK E-TYPE ANNIVERSARY

The unusual sight of 50 Jaguar E-types greeted Londoners yesterday as a fleet of privately owned vehicles travelled in convoy through the Capital to the 2011 Motorexpo in Canary Wharf, marking 50 years of the sports car in style.

Organised by the Jaguar Drivers' Club, the convoy started its journey under police escort at Forbes House in central London, home of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The route took in landmarks including Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square before arriving at Canary Wharf where the cars lined up on display.

Leading the convoy was a team of professional cyclists joined by ex-Formula One World Champion Nigel Mansell, supporting Motorexpo's chosen charity, UK Youth.

The Jaguar E-type was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961. When launched its mix of daring design, advanced engineering and the ability to hit 150 mph caused a sensation. The intervening years have seen it become one of the most acclaimed and desirable sports cars of all time.

The same spirit of innovation and emphasis on design lives on in Jaguar today, with the latest XF, XK and XJ models making their UK debut at the Motorexpo. Also present will be the fastest Jaguar production car ever created, the 550 PS XKR-S.

On arriving at Canary Wharf, Graeme Carver, CEO of Motorexpo commented: 'It's been a terrific day and a fitting tribute to the E-type – we are incredibly grateful to the police and all the owners for providing their support to make it possible. We all feel honoured to have taken part in such a key celebration of what was, and remains, a landmark car.'

BRITAIN’S BEST SPORTSCAR – THE SHORTLIST

In an attempt to settle an age-old argument, classic car fans are being given the chance to vote on the best British sportscar of all time. A panel of experts has prepared a shortlist of 15 iconic cars covering all the great British marques and enthusiasts can vote on-line for their own favourite via the official website of the Silverstone Classic.

As well as being firmly established as the world’s biggest classic racing festival, the annual Silverstone Classic also features one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of classic cars. This summer’s three-day event will see more than 120 UK car clubs displaying in excess of 7000 cars including large numbers of those shortlisted on-line for the coveted ‘Best British Sportscar’ title.

Centre stage this year goes to the E-type Jaguar, with the Silverstone Classic chosen by all the major Jaguar clubs as the location for the legendary model’s official 50th birthday party. The target for the event is to have 1000 E-types on display and then send them on to the Grand Prix circuit during Saturday to set a Guinness World Record for the greatest number of E-types in a parade. Cars from all over the world are already confirmed, including North America and all over Europe.

But the E-type isn’t the only car – or Jaguar – shortlisted on the website for the ‘Best British Sportscar’ crown; it is joined by its XK120 predecessor on the shortlist. Triumph, though, has the most finalists with TR3, TR6 and Spitfire models all making the last 15. Austin Healy (‘Frogeye’ Sprite and 3000), Lotus (Seven and Elan) and MG (MGA and MGB) join Jaguar with two models on the final roster, which is completed with the AC Cobra, Aston Martin DB5, Morgan and TVR Griffith.

From 1-3 July, the Festival of Speed will be the only place in Britain to see the very latest supercars in action, as well as up close in the popular Goodwood Supercar Paddock. The Festival of Speed has firmly established itself as the best place to see the newest, greatest and fastest supercars from around the globe. The Goodwood Supercar Run is unique in providing a dynamic environment in which the public can view new models for the first time.

Unlike a conventional motor show, the Supercar Run affords a fantastic opportunity not only to exhibit a new supercar, but also to show it in action on the Goodwood hillclimb. Last year's Festival saw over 20 UK public debuts out of a 50-car field, and with six weeks still to go, this year’s entry is looking even stronger.

For 2011 the Supercar Run promises the very latest supercars from all around the world, with cars from as many as 11 countries anticipated. Cars already confirmed to be making their World and/or UK dynamic debuts will include the Ferrari FF, Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, Jaguar XKR-S, Pagani Huayra, GTA Spano, Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, Hennessy Venom GT, Koenigsegg Agera R, Marussia B1 and B2, Hulme CanAm Spyder, the six-wheeled Covini C6, and the production version of the McLaren MP4-12C, which made its World debut in pre-series form at the 2010 Festival of Speed.

At noon on Sunday May 22nd, Nicky West and Rob Stacey were waved off by celebrity chef, Jean Christophe Novelli, as they departed from Hatfield House to begin their incredible journey.

An eBay purchase, mysteriously the Cherry Red 1961 Mini had been off the road since 1967 although the only obvious fault with the engine was a leaking hose and crossed sparkplug wires. Although carefully prepared for the journey, the car is unrestored and original. However, this is an 850cc model, so that Pyramid is quite a goal!

In 2012, Veloce will be publishing the book 'Mini Minor to Asia Minor' covering the journey in detail and packed with photos. 40% of the royalties earned by the book will go to the Willow Foundation.

“It is going to be a really hard slog,” admitted Nicky. “The Mini has no air conditioning and we’ll spend over 10 hours in the car each day with temperatures around 40◦C, so we should certainly come back a bit thinner! The political situation in some of the countries we travel through is a slight concern at present but we have a number of alternative routes already planned should we need to make a diversion”.
“At the end of the day it should be a fantastic drive and it’s for a really great cause” Rob added.

The Willow Foundation is a national charity established in 1999 by Arsenal legend Bob Wilson and his wife Megs in memory of their daughter Anna. The charity assists some of the estimated 12,500 people in the UK, aged 16–40, who are diagnosed every year with a life-threatening illness.

If you are in France for Le Mans you might like to know that Mike Moreton, author of 'Jaguar XJ220 - The Inside Story' published by Veloce, is hosting a gathering of Jaguar enthusiasts to celebrate the recent publication of his fascinating book.

A fine buffet lunch and wines will be served at L'Aubergeade, a beautiful restaurant in the village of Diou (postcode 36260), near Vierzon on June 14th. Mike will be on hand to sign books and to talk about his time directing the XJ220 project.

Also in attendance will be Robert and Tony Loades, Directors of Abbey Panels, Coventry, the company that built the high-tech aluminium bodies for the XJ220. Robert and Tony will be bringing the first XJ220 built at the Bloxham assembly plant which, appropriately, carries the registration number 'XJ220'

VOLKSWAGEN CELEBRATES GOLF GTI ANNIVERSARY WITH EDITION 35

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the original hot hatch, Volkswagen has announced the first details of the latest special edition Golf GTI model – the Golf GTI Edition 35. With an increase in power of 25 PS over the ‘standard’ car, the Edition 35 develops 235 PS and is the most powerful production Golf GTI to date.

Since the debut of the first Golf GTI in 1976, the iconic model has enjoyed an uninterrupted history of success which now spans 35 years. During this time, the GTI has become a car with cult appeal as well as an independent brand and milestone GTI anniversaries have been celebrated with exclusive special models, and Volkswagen continues this tradition with the Edition 35.

In addition to the increase in power, the Edition 35 combines classic GTI design elements with features specially created for this latest anniversary model.

A revised front bumper is joined by lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels while, in the cabin, the golf ball gearknob makes a return. To mark out this special edition further, the ‘35’ signature appears on the front wings, sill plates, head restraints and on the centre panel of the seats.

This latest anniversary model will make its world debut at the legendary GTI event at Wörthersee in Austria at the beginning of June.
