DORSET OFFERS ADVICE TO NATION’S DRIVERS

Dorset motoring author Bruce Grant-Braham’s latest book, the RAC Essential Driver’s Handbook, has pooled advice from a team of the County’s experts to offer valuable advice to car drivers nationwide.
To crown the local connection the handbook has been published by a prestigious Dorset publisher.

Bruce, previously known for his motor sport and F1 books, was commissioned by Poundbury-based Veloce Publishing for this valuable addition to the company’s range of RAC advice handbooks.

“The RAC Essential Driver’s Handbook offers practical advice to car drivers as to how to they might best cope with some of the difficult situations that can occur at any time whilst driving, “says Guild of Motoring Writers member Bruce.

“Whether it is a breakdown, an accident, a car fire, an isolated car park or the difficulty of being a lone driver I hope the RAC Essential Driver’s Handbook will provide some ways of avoiding or minimising the effects of such stressful motoring situations,” Bruce said.

“I am extremely grateful for the professional advice I received during my research. I am pleased to say that we can be reassured that we have some nationally recognised experts in our County and I am indebted to those individuals from Dorset Police, Dorset Fire and Rescue and South West Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust who willingly offered advice to make sure that the final manuscript is as accurate and up-to-date as possible.”

The Essential Driver’s Handbook

Emergency situations can occur without warning and in any condition – day or night, in fine or inclement weather. This book shows you what to do in the event of an accident, whatever the severity. Practical roadside first aid basics are addressed, as are the practical and legal obligations for all those who may be involved, and explanations of what the emergency services will do, and why. Other situations addressed include how to avoid problems as a lone driver, as well as situations such as car-jacking. Finally, car parks, and their own specific security problems, are discussed. Bruce Grant-Braham has previously written histories of the Lotus and Williams F1 teams as well as of the Thruxton motor racing circuit.

He is Director of the Motor Sport Research Group at Bournemouth University, possesses a PhD and is a former Mayor of Poole. He is a member of the Guild of Motoring Writers.

A sell-out 146,000 motor sport enthusiasts and retro-fashion fans flocked to this weekend’s Goodwood Revival (14-16 September) to join in the fun and celebrations at the world’s largest historic motor race meeting.

This year’s Revival offered visitors a truly unique opportunity to see a significant gathering of mythical pre-war Silver Arrows being demonstrated on track together at speed for the first time in more than 70 years. The sensational Auto Unions and Mercedes-Benz appeared alongside examples of the ERAs, Maseratis, Rileys and MGs.

The St. Moritz 1948 Winter Olympic-themed Credit Suisse Press Centre at Goodwood Motor Circuit welcomed some of the biggest names in historic racing on Friday for a Forum that debated whether the spirit of the sport is being challenged.

A capacity audience, featuring over 100 members of the media, listened in as Jochen Mass and Sir Stirling Moss were joined by Desiré Wilson, who remains the only female winner of an F1 race; Anthony Reid, former Japanese F3 Champion; Goodwood CEO Lord March; and Ben Cussons, Royal Automobile Club Motoring Committee Chairman, to consider the greatest threats to the future of historic racing.

ANDREW JENKINSON APPEARS ON BBC1 ONE SHOW AS AUTHORITY ON SPRITE CARAVANS

Andrew Jenkinson, author of The Story of Sprite Caravans, made an appearance on BBC1's The One Show on Friday 4th May. The feature, which coincided with the May bank holiday weekend, included a brief history of the Sprite Caravan and founder Sam Alper OBE. Andrew chatted to Phil Tufnell beside a fully restored Sprite Caravan. Well done Andrew!

JAGUARS FROM THE PAST AND PRESENT LAUNCH GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

Jaguar XKR-S at the Goodwood Festival of Speed
The 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed was launched yesterday with Jaguar playing a key role as the event celebrates the 50th anniversary of the iconic E-type.

Present at the launch were Yasmin Le Bon with her daughter and fellow model, Amber, who posed alongside arguably the most famous E-type of all – one of two cars to have made an epic, high-speed journey from Coventry to Geneva in March 1961 at the behest of Sir William Lyons. The car, a prototype Series One E-type roadster carrying the registration '77 RW', was delivered by Norman Dewis, Chief Test Driver at the time.

Norman's modern day successor, Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity, at the wheel of the new Jaguar XKR-S, marked the event in style with a series of dramatic demonstration runs up the notorious Goodwood hill.

Joining Mike in taking on the hill was ex-Le Mans and BTCC racer Anthony Reid driving an XFR – his enthusiastic driving style won him the TAG Heuer 'Most Spirited Getaway' award.

The 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed will see Jaguar take centre stage with a dramatic sculpture being commissioned for the lawn in front of Goodwood House. Enthusiasts will be able to view an array of Jaguars from the past, present and a little way into the future with the XK120, and examples of the C-, D- and, of course, E-type taking part in demonstration runs in front of the crowds.

The Festival will start on Thursday 30 June with the Moving Motor Show – a chance for visitors to experience the latest Jaguar road cars and even get behind and take on the Goodwood hill.

ROY SMITH COLLECTOR OF ALL-THINGS ALPINE

Author of Veloce books, Roy Smith, is photographed on page 53 of the June 2010 edition of Classic & Sports Car magazine.


Roy Smith is a retired company director who has a life long passion for motor sport, and, since 1968, Alpine Renault in particular. He began writing in the 1960s for club magazines, mainly interviews with the notables of the time.

The stunning display (pictured above) of Roy's model collection of Alpine cars ranges from a 4CV-based coupé to R5 Turbos, and includes his super-detailed Provence Moulage kit of the '78 Le Mans-winner.

Roy debuted with Alpine & Renault – The Development of the Revolutionary Turbo F1 Car: 1968 to 1979, followed more recently with Alpine & Renault – The Sports Prototypes – Volume 1: 1963-1969 & Alpine & Renault – The Sports Prototypes – Volume 2: 1973-1978.
He likes to provide a good read to newcomers and hardened enthusiasts alike. He has written many motor sport and Alpine-related articles since 1989 for various magazines, and is the UK historic correspondent for the French magazine Retro Passion and the Alpine Renault magazine, Mille Miles.

Roy has begun work on his next book, which will be entitled Amédée Gordini – a true racing legend scheduled for publication late 2011.
