WHEELER DEALER MIKE BREWER READIES FRENCH FANCY FOR LANCASTER INSURANCE CLASSIC MOTOR SHOW

With a legion of fans across the world, TV’s Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer is used to rolling up his sleeves and bringing classic cars back to their best. However, for his latest project, which is to be revealed at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, he’s taking a different approach.

“I wanted to show people you can still buy a viable classic and, if you do your research, find a specialist to turn around a car” says Mike.

The car in question is a 1972 Citroen SM – a car from the height of Citroen’s most eccentric and turbulent period. “It’s a car that would send a lot of people running scared – they’re very complex, but I wanted to show that if you do your research you can find the right people to turn a car around” he adds.

The SM launched in 1970 and in ’72, the year Mike’s SM left the factory, it was voted Motor Trend’s Car of the Year. Citroen was in the midst of disastrous partnership with Maserati, a marriage that Mike says brought together two of the most eccentric, and most fragile manufacturers.

Despite that, the SM continued Citroen’s fine reputation of creating cars that were beautifully designed and intelligently engineered.

As TV’s Wheeler Dealer, Mike gets plenty of emails from people asking him to take on a car as his latest project and that’s how he found the SM. “I got an email from a guy about the car – it had been in the same family from new and had been used regularly, up until about 20 years ago,” notes Mike.

“One day it just stopped – the family didn’t really know the best way to sort it, so it was rolled into a garage and left.”

With less than 40,000 miles on the clock and an impressive history file behind it, Mike’s interest was piqued and he soon agreed a deal.

Mike then turned to the internet to look for the right specialist to bring the Citroen back to life. “I looked online, I read reviews and I asked for recommendations. It’s about doing your research” says Brewer.

Mike’s research led him to Paragon MoT and Service Centre in Northampton and their near neighbours Cosmetic Autocare. “I didn’t know either of the companies, but I did my research – I wanted to show that anyone could do it, not just a Wheeler Dealer!”

While Paragon have been charged with the mechanics, Cosmetic Autocare have been looking after the body. “It’s getting a full respray in the original Vert Agenta green so will look as good as it did 40 years ago.”

When it comes to restoration projects it’s easy to let the costs spiral, but again, Mike is keen to keep things grounded. “The budget’s not endless – I wanted this to be a realistic project. I reckon by the time I’m done the car would have cost me somewhere around £10-£12,000 and the result will be a car that I’ll use and enjoy and one that’ll be worth considerably more than that on the open market.”

Mike’s plan is to have the car ready for this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at Birmingham’s NEC from the 11th to 13th November. “We want to have it on the stage at the show, so we’ve only got a few weeks to get it finished.”

As well as showing the car, Mike is running a very special competition via his website www.mikebrewer.tv, offering two tickets to this year’s show and a lucky punter the chance to join Mike for a test drive in the SM, hitting the mean streets of Birmingham, straight from the show.

“It’s going to be great – I’m saying to whoever wins to bring their phone, their camera, whatever, because the test drive will be brilliant – it’ll be the first time I’ve taken the car out on the road, and well, I won’t shut up!”

MOTORING FANS VOTE THE LAMBORGHINI URRACO AS THE NUMBER ONE WHEELER DEALER RESTORATION

Motoring fans have voted the Lamborghini Urraco as the number one restoration completed by Wheeler Dealers Mike Brewer and Edd China, in a survey held by the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show.

The 1972 Lamborghini Urraco P250S featured in series ten of Discovery’s hit motoring show, which has just celebrated its 100th restoration. Mike brought the car that had been in storage for six years in Poland, despite not being able to start the car due to a loose cam belt and or move it because of seized brakes, for £21,380, which makes it the most expensive car purchased by Wheeler Dealers.

It was sold for £35,000 after a full restoration and taking part in a 50th anniversary parade in Italy.

Mike said: “It's fantastic that the nation has chosen such a great Top Ten. All of our favourites are in the list but the truth is we have loved every one of the 100 cars over the past eleven years.

“The Urracco was a special show, as it's one of the most desirable cars ever and a real treat to get ‘a Bull in the China shop’. It culminated with a brilliant test drive through the Dolomites on Edd’s birthday. It was a real special treat. For fun, the Mustang was a blast, from buying in boiling California to the final test drive where Edd got to play in the dressing up box and pretended he was a cop for a cops and robbers chase scene...very Hollywood. We hope you enjoyed the last 100, there's a 100 more coming.”

Second place was taken by the 2003 Morgan +4 from series nine, brought for £13,000 and sold for £21,000, with third place going to the series ten 1972 Ford Escort Mk1, which Edd transformed from a bronze £4,500 project to a bright yellow stunner, selling for £11,800.

The Top Ten also featured the Peugeot 205 GTi from series two, the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo from series five, the Dodge Charger from series eight and the Ford Mustang Fastback from series nine.

Show organisers are hoping to gather the top five cars for a special display at the show so fans get to see the cars up close.

Wheeler Dealers Mike and Edd, currently filming a new series in the USA, will be at Birmingham’s NEC from 14th to 16th November to host the Wheeler Dealer Live Stage at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show. Mike will interview special guests including Quentin Willson and Sir Stirling Moss while Edd restores a classic car over the three days. There are also car parades, Q&A sessions and the mayhem of some classic game shows.

The Wheeler Dealers Live Stage is one of the most popular features of the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, the UK’s biggest indoor motoring event. NEW SERIES OF WHEELER DEALERS!

Wheeler Dealers is back! Check out series 11 schedule ...

Ford Fiesta XR2

17th March

Mike decides to go back to the 80’s and bags a bargain example of one of his dream cars - but there’s only £1000 to spend on repairs or the profit’s at risk. Edd isn’t convinced the XR2 deserves all the praise, but comes up with cheap and innovative solutions to add value. Mike finds a clever way to get Edd all the rare parts he needs and pulls out all the stops to prove the Fiesta is the hot hatch that started a fast Ford revolution.

Porsche 993 Targa

24th March

The last of the air-cooled legends. Mike goes in search of what many fans consider to be the last truly great Porsche. What he finds is the cheapest, tattiest 993 in the country. Mike however, can see a mechanically sound motor and potential profit lurking beneath seventeen years of muck and grime. Edd sets to work on a rescue mission to restore the car’s racing pedigree. It’s unloved and underpowered but after Edd lavishes some care and attention on the car, will the smart engine fixes and custom handling package spell profit on a Porsche that is still major money?

Mazda RX7

31st March

With its legendary mix of unique technology and awesome performance, Mazda’s coupe is unlike any other. Mike finds one that appears to have nothing wrong with it and challenges Edd to make a good car even better. But these cars are complex and unforgiving. So while Edd handles with care, Mike sorts out some stylish mods to make the RX7’s looks match its performance.

Citroen 2CV

7th April

Mike finds a fifty-six year old Citroen 2CV, retired in the sunny south of France. It’s a real people’s car with bags of charm. With cheeky bug-eyed headlights and rare suicide doors, the 2CV is one of the most recognisable cars ever designed and renowned, over its forty-two year production cycle, for its stark simplicity. Almost every aspect of this quirky car requires attention; Edd strips it back to bare bones to breathe new life back into the smoky old engine. A fresh paint job and interior will help to secure the car’s future for another fifty years but can Mike get top dollar for a car with no frills?

Chevrolet Camaro

14th April

It’s time for the boys to tackle one of the meanest muscle cars around. But finding the right one won’t be easy as the Camaro is already a cult classic. Mike tracks down a part-finished restoration in California with its fair share of problems. Edd has his work cut out with loads of missing parts to find and fit. With all this time and effort, is there still a profit on the cards?

Maserati 3200gt

21st April

Mike buys a supercar from the super saver menu. An Italian thoroughbred for under £10k. But supercars mean super bills. Mike’s reports of wayward handling and a hair-trigger throttle could lead to either bankruptcy or a very nasty accident. Some of Edd’s smart solutions could help to keep the budget under control but will it be enough to tame this technology packed, turbocharged V8? Techy tyres help get the luxury GT powerhouse back on track and an overhauled air-conditioning system restores some Italian flair.

Amphicar

28th April

Mike takes the ultimate plunge and invests in a car - and a boat, all in one. It’s the Amphicar, an amphibious vehicle that Edd has been dreaming of for years. But when he peels back the layers and discovers the car’s problems are serious, will he find himself in deep water and rinse away all the profit? This challenge truly puts Mike and Edd’s skills to the test and could see them literally sink or swim!

WHEELER DEALERS CELEBRATES 100th CAR RESTORATION WITH VETERAN CAR RUN

Wheeler Dealer presenters Mike Brewer and Edd China will drive the restored Darracq 1903 in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on Sunday, 3 November.

To celebrate reaching the 100th car milestone on hit Discovery Channel show Wheeler Dealers, presenters Mike Brewer and Edd China will restore and drive their dream veteran car, the Darracq 1903, in the Royal Automobile Club London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on Sunday, 3 November.

To mark this incredible milestone Mike and Edd return to their favourite childhood film; 1953 BAFTA winning Genevieve, a charming tale of rivals who race to Brighton and back for a bet. The real star of the film is Genevieve, a Darracq 1904, and for their 100th build Mike and Edd will restore their very own Genevieve to run the 60-mile distance in the Veteran Car Run (VCR).

Mike said: “I’m so proud that we’ve reached this milestone. The Darracq is the perfect motor for us to celebrate the 100th Wheeler Dealers car – a car that’s over 100 years old itself. One thing is for sure – Edd’s going to have his work cut out on this one to make sure we cross that finish line!” Edd added: “I’ve wanted to work on a veteran car for years – the Darracq is an incredible machine so I can’t wait to get under the bonnet! It’s going to be a steep learning curve but I’m determined to get us to Brighton in style.”

Haynes International Motor Museum has lent Wheeler Dealers its rare 1903 Darracq for this special episode. The car is one of the most sought after veterans, an instantly recognisable forerunner of today’s motorcar, because of its connection with Genevieve. Built by a French manufacturer the car is well known for its innovative design and engineering.

Throughout the show Mike and Edd will draw parallels between this four-seater, front-engine veteran and the typical car in the driveway of a Wheeler Dealers viewer as they restore numerous parts to make the car road safe in time for the run, the world’s longest running and greatest motoring celebration.

In Wheeler Dealers, now in production for an 11th series, Mike and Edd hunt for rundown classic cars and transform them into sleek, gleaming beauties ready to sell on for a healthy profit. The 100th car special featuring the Veteran Car Run will air next year.

GoMW LAUNCHES NEW MENTORING SCHEME

TV star Mike Brewer has signed up to mentor young recruits

Richard Aucock has signed up to mentor young recruits

The Guild of Motoring Writers has launched a mentoring scheme for new young members, enabling the rising stars of motoring journalism to tap into the Guild’s deep pool of experience.

Nearly 20 high-profile GoMW members have agreed to join the scheme, which will see all new members under the age of 30 offered a mentor.

Mentors have agreed to share their contact details with the new Guild members, so if the newcomers ever need to run something past them, ask a question about their career or simply have someone to mull things over with, they’ll know where to turn.

The brainchild of Guild committee member James Baggott, the mentoring scheme is just one of a number of initiatives the GoMW is rolling out in 2013.

“When I first started in this industry I could have done with an experienced journalist who I could turn to for advice,” explained Baggott. “Knowing there is someone you can talk to in confidence, who has been in the industry a little longer than you have, will make a big difference to many up-and-coming young journalists.”

Many high-profile Guild members have agreed to join the mentoring scheme, including TV star Mike Brewer, who fronts Wheeler Dealers and Trading Up on Discovery. Autocar editor Jim Holder, former Top Gear presenter Sue Baker, The Guild of Motoring Writers chairman Richard Aucock and national newspaper writers Nat Barnes and Honest John are also on board.

Guild chairman Aucock added: “This is yet another fantastic initiative by the Guild that shows how we are supporting our young members and helping to attract new blood into joining. We’ve had an influx of younger journalists signing up to be members in recent months, and this mentoring scheme will be something they can tap into immediately.”

Membership to the Guild costs £97.50 with a joining fee of £25. For under-30s that is reduced to £62.50 with no joining fee. Members get access to a host of benefits – including free AA breakdown cover – as well as the chance to enter the coveted annual awards.

The full list of mentors is as follows:

1 Sue Baker
2 Sarah Bradley
3 John Kendall
4 Richard Yarrow
